Can a FILM SLR camera flash be used for a DIGITAL SLR camera?

The camera flash is Vivitar Zoom Thyristor 3500 and was used for my old Canon AE1 film camera. Now, I am thinking of buying a new digital SLR camera...Can a FILM SLR camera flash be used for a DIGITAL SLR camera?
Some say that it might not be a good idea to use older flashes meant for film SLR's on DSLR's. The trigger voltages that were safe for the simpler cameras may be excessive for the DSLR's electronics.Can a FILM SLR camera flash be used for a DIGITAL SLR camera?
Yes, you can use a film flash on a digital camera. However, the new flashes have upgraded electronics that allows them to act ';smarter.'; I would recommend upgrading to a Canon 430EX II.
